SoundPost

AirPods on a Mac, minus the annoyances.

AirPods stuck to your iPhone, music that sounds like a phone call, ▶︎ opening Apple Music when you use Spotify: one small menu bar app fixes all three.

Sound familiar?

Four everyday annoyances. SoundPost fixes each one, and you can turn each fix off.

1

“My AirPods are connected to my iPhone, again.”

Getting them back means Control Center, Bluetooth, wait, try again. SoundPost does it with one click in the menu bar, or a hotkey.

2

“Why does my music suddenly sound like a phone call?”

When any app turns on the AirPods mic (Siri, dictation, a web page), macOS drops them into call mode and music turns muddy. SoundPost keeps the Mac's own mic as input, so music stays at full quality. Calls in Zoom, Teams or FaceTime still get the AirPods mic.

3

“I pressed ▶︎ and Apple Music opened.”

SoundPost sends the play key to the app you last listened to, Spotify included, and never opens Apple Music on its own.

4

“One app is way louder than the rest.”

macOS has one volume slider. SoundPost gives every app its own, with mute, so a loud call or game doesn't drown your music.

One app instead of three: ToothFairy, MacMediaKeyForwarder and a volume mixer. Credits below ↓

SoundPost puts together things these apps did first, and they deserve the credit. The code is my own.

One-click AirPods connect from the menu bar, hotkeys, battery levels and keeping the Mac's mic. The app that showed this should be easy.

Questions

Anything else? Email me.

Which headphones work?

AirPods, Beats and other Bluetooth headphones and speakers. Battery shows where macOS reports it.

What happens after 14 days?

The app reminds you two hours before, then pauses until you enter a key. Your settings are kept.

Does it need the internet?

Only to start the trial, activate a key, and re-check the license about once a month. It sends a hashed machine id and the app version, nothing about what you do, and works offline for weeks.

I got a new Mac. Now what?

In Settings → License, click Release This Mac on the old one, then enter the same key on the new one. A Mac you no longer have can be released from any other Mac on the license.

Why isn't it on the Mac App Store?

Apple's App Sandbox blocks what these apps need to do. Downloads here are signed and notarized by Apple, so macOS opens them without warnings.
